{"id":36678,"date":"2022-06-13T06:33:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-13T06:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cloudnewshub.com\/archives\/36678"},"modified":"2022-06-13T06:33:00","modified_gmt":"2022-06-13T06:33:00","slug":"new-uk-digital-strategy-aims-to-secure-future-growth-for-150bn-digital-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cloudnewshub.com\/?p=36678","title":{"rendered":"New UK digital strategy aims to secure future growth for \u00a3150bn digital economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cloudnewshub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/new-uk-digital-strategy-aims-to-secure-future-growth-for-150bn-digital-economy.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The government has announced a new, wide-ranging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/uks-digital-strategy\">digital strategy<\/a> that aims to help co-ordinate and focus efforts around the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/252521379\/Tech-startups-raise-more-than-12bn-in-2022-to-date\">\u00a3150bn UK digital economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Launched by digital secretary Nadine Dorries at London Tech Week, the plan brings together numerous existing initiatives and some new ones, with the aim of delivering on the government\u2019s \u201cvision\u201d to make the UK \u201cthe best place in the world to start and grow a technology business\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The government said the strategy \u201cbrings cross-government tech and digital policies together in one unified roadmap for ensuring digital technology, infrastructure and data drives economic growth and innovation in the coming years. The plan will lead to new jobs, skills and services that benefit and level up the whole of the UK\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The strategy focuses on six key areas, defined as:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Digital foundations<\/strong> \u2013 including infrastructure such as broadband, use of data, cyber security and digital regulation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ideas and intellectual property<\/strong> \u2013 covering the UK\u2019s innovation ecosystem, including universities and the private sector and building on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/252504367\/UK-government-publishes-full-Innovation-Strategy\">2021 Innovation Strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Digital skills<\/strong> \u2013 reform and improvement of skills and talent provision for the digital economy, including: strengthening digital education; better awareness of how to get into digital occupations; enhancing the digital skills base; improving access to digital skills; and recruiting global talent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Financing digital growth<\/strong> \u2013 this includes improving access to funding through the British Business Bank and British Patient Capital, supporting startups and building on the success of the UK fintech sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spreading prosperity and levelling up<\/strong> \u2013 using digital technologies to support key strategic priorities, such as enhancing productivity, improving public services, levelling up, and achieving net zero.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enhancing the UK\u2019s place in the world<\/strong> \u2013 how the UK will use its \u201cstrategic advantage in digital and tech\u201d to influence global decisions in a digital world. This includes maintaining the UK as a science and technology superpower and helping to set global standards on digital products and services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UK\u2019s economic future, jobs, wage levels, prosperity, national security, cost of living, productivity, ability to compete globally and our geo-political standing in the world are all reliant on continued and growing success in digital technology,\u201d said Chris Philp, minister for tech and the digital economy at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Digital Strategy sets out [our] vision and the actions required to deliver it. Estimates commissioned by the government suggest that our approach to supporting and strengthening the digital economy could grow the UK tech sector\u2019s annual gross value added (GVA) by an additional \u00a341.5bn by 2025, and create a further 678,000 jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The strategy covers almost every aspect of the government\u2019s reach across the digital economy, from broadband to cyber security, startups to digital skills, sustainability to supercomputers.<\/p>\n<p>The plan documents a series of more than 100 individual actions and targets \u2013 many of which have been previously announced \u2013 intended to underpin the roll-out of the strategy. These include, for example:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"default-list\">\n<li>By 2025, at least 85% coverage nationwide of gigabit broadband through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/252498150\/UK-government-aims-to-get-national-broadband-project-back-on-track-with-Project-Gigabit\">Project Gigabit programme<\/a>, increasing to at least 99% gigabit coverage by 2030.<\/li>\n<li>By 2025, expanded mobile network coverage to 95% of the UK through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/252496168\/First-Phase-of-Shared-Rural-Network-set-to-bring-187m-boost-to-UK-rural-businesses\">Shared Rural Network<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Increase R&amp;D investment to \u00a320bn a year by 2024\/25.<\/li>\n<li>Launch the Digital Skills Council, to set an \u201cambitious agenda\u201d to tackle the digital skills needed for the workforce of the future.<\/li>\n<li>Increase artificial intelligence (AI) adoption in sectors located outside London and the South-East.<\/li>\n<li>Providing \u00a3315m of funding to support sustainable transitions in industry, including in the datacentre sector.<\/li>\n<li>Use the G7 as a forum to champion open society principles in tech.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe UK Digital Strategy is a roadmap we will follow to strengthen our global position as a science and tech superpower,\u201d said Philp. \u201cOur future prosperity and place in the world depends upon it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More legislation is due in the coming months to further the government\u2019s aims in specific areas, such as reforms of data protection laws, a plan for the UK semiconductor industry, and regulating AI.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government has announced a new, wide-ranging digital strategy that aims to help co-ordinate and focus efforts around the \u00a3150bn UK digital economy.
